AEROCAN

The AEROCAN sunphotometer network is run as a joint collaboration between the Université de Sherbrooke and the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC). It is a federated member of the much larger AERONET system of CIMEL sunphotometers run out of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The Metrological Service of Canada is a part of Environment Canada, a department of Canada’s federal government. The MSC mandate is to provide meteorological information, monitor air and water quality, and conduct research on climate and atmospheric science. The overall AEROCAN objective is to provide a sampling density of columnar aerosol properties which are as representative as possible of national, regional and local variations across Canada.

Cimel at KelownaFor more than a decade the AEROCAN sunphotometry network has generated aerosol concentration and size information on a national scale. Satellite retrievals of similar aerosol parameters provide complementary coverage to the time-intensive but spatially sparse AEROCAN measurements.
